Home Renovation & Remodeling

Licensed General Contractor & In-House Electrical — Pasadena, Altadena, Malibu & Greater Los Angeles

Custom home renovation living room Los Angeles CA

A well-planned renovation can add more long-term value than almost any other investment in your home — especially in Los Angeles neighborhoods where older homes retain beautiful character but lose efficiency, capacity, and livability without careful updates. DG Custom Construction & Electric renovates, modernizes, and reconfigures existing homes across Pasadena, Altadena, Sherman Oaks, Malibu, and the greater LA area. We pair careful structural assessment with contemporary finishes and updated electrical systems — giving older homes the performance and feel of new construction without erasing the character that made them desirable in the first place.

Every renovation we take on starts with a written scope, a real budget, and a clear timeline. We walk the house, assess the structure, evaluate the existing electrical and plumbing, and identify what should be preserved, what should be modernized, and what has to be rebuilt. Only then do we put a proposal in front of you.

Types of Renovations We Handle

  • Whole-home renovations. Full interior remodels including layout changes, finish replacements, and system upgrades.
  • Kitchen remodels. From light updates to full structural expansions, combined with electrical, plumbing, and lighting redesigns.
  • Bathroom remodels. Primary-bath remodels, guest baths, powder rooms, wet rooms, and aging-in-place retrofits.
  • Historic restoration. Careful restoration of Craftsman, Spanish Colonial, Mid-Century, and other period properties across Pasadena and Altadena.
  • Structural work. Wall removal, beam installation, room combinations, and open-plan conversions.
  • System modernization. Full electrical modernization — panel upgrades, rewiring, lighting redesign, smart-home integration.

Our Renovation Process

1. Walkthrough & Assessment

We meet you at your home, walk every room, and document existing conditions. Older homes in Pasadena or Altadena often reveal knob-and-tube wiring, outdated panels, cast-iron plumbing, or structural modifications that were never permitted. We identify these before the contract is written — not after demolition.

2. Written Scope & Budget

You receive a line-item scope of work, a real budget, and an honest timeline. If trade-offs are needed to match your budget, we walk through them with you in person, with options, before you commit.

3. Permitting

Most meaningful renovations require permits — especially any structural changes, electrical upgrades, plumbing moves, or additions. We handle submittals and inspections throughout LA City, LA County, and Pasadena.

4. Demolition & Discovery

Once walls open up, we document what's behind them, share findings with you, and adjust the scope in writing if anything material changes. Transparency is our core commitment during this phase.

5. Rebuild & Finishing

Framing, rough-in (electrical, plumbing, HVAC), drywall, finishes, fixtures, and punch list. Our in-house electrical team keeps circuit design and lighting layout in sync with finish work instead of retrofitting after.

6. Final Walkthrough

We walk the finished home with you, compile a punch list, and close out permits with final inspections. You receive a written warranty covering workmanship.

Respecting the Original Architecture

Los Angeles is defined by its residential architecture — Craftsman bungalows, Spanish Colonial Revivals, Mid-Century hillside moderns. A good renovation respects what already works. When we renovate an older home in Pasadena or Altadena, we preserve original millwork, doors, hardware, and built-ins wherever possible, and we match new casework, trim, and flooring to the original profiles. Modernization should upgrade how a home performs — not flatten what makes it distinctive.

Electrical, Plumbing, and HVAC as Part of Every Remodel

Every meaningful remodel is an opportunity to bring old systems up to current standards — and it's far cheaper to do it when walls are already open than to revisit the house later. Our in-house electricians handle panel upgrades, whole-home rewiring, grounded outlets, GFCI and AFCI code compliance, and lighting redesigns as an integrated part of the renovation scope. We coordinate licensed plumbers and HVAC specialists on the same schedule, so your remodel delivers a modern home, not a cosmetically refreshed older one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Whole-home renovations typically take four to nine months depending on size, scope, and whether structural or addition work is involved. Kitchen-only or bath-only projects are usually four to twelve weeks.

For kitchen or bath remodels, often yes. For whole-home renovations involving plumbing or electrical shutdowns, we usually recommend relocating — we can help you plan around key milestones to minimize disruption.

Yes. Every structural, electrical, plumbing, or addition change that requires a permit is pulled and inspected through the proper jurisdiction. We never work off-permit on permit-required scope.

Discovery findings — outdated wiring, water damage, undisclosed modifications — are common in older LA-area homes. We document findings, photograph them, and write a change order with clear cost and timeline impact before proceeding.

Absolutely. We routinely work with outside designers and architects, and we welcome the collaboration. Good design plus disciplined construction is always a better outcome than either alone.
